Turkey’s ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktaş, hosted Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman at the Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu on Thursday, the embassy announced.
In a statement posted on its official Twitter account, the embassy said Ambassador Aktaş expressed pride in welcoming Karman, noting that the visit reflected Turkey’s engagement with prominent global figures in the fields of peace and human rights.
Karman, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011, is widely recognized as one of the Arab world’s leading advocates for human rights and freedom of expression. She rose to prominence during Yemen’s Arab Spring uprising, earning the nicknames “Mother of the Revolution” and the “Iron Lady” for her role in mobilizing peaceful protests.
Her visit to Somalia comes as part of a broader program of meetings and events in Mogadishu focused on women, youth, and development.
