Tawakkol Karman Receives Guardian of Democracy Award in Berlin
Yemeni human rights advocate and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman has received the Guardian of Democracy Award from the Global Forum in recognition of her longstanding advocacy for democracy, freedom of expression, and human rights.
The award was presented during a ceremony held in the German capital, where Karman delivered remarks highlighting the global struggle for democratic values and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
In her acceptance speech, Karman described the recognition as a collective honor shared by individuals worldwide who have fought for liberty and democratic governance. She emphasized that freedom represents an inherent human right and paid tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to defending it despite repression, imprisonment, or political persecution.
Karman said the award represents recognition of the sacrifices made by activists, journalists, and ordinary citizens who resisted authoritarian rule and continued advocating for justice under difficult conditions. She stressed that many defenders of democratic values have paid a heavy personal cost, including lost opportunities, disrupted lives, and threats to their safety.
During her remarks, Karman framed the award as both recognition and responsibility, stating that it reinforces her commitment to continue advocating for freedom and supporting victims of rights violations worldwide. She reiterated her longstanding support for democratic systems governed by the rule of law and respect for human dignity.
Karman also warned against the global rise of authoritarian practices, emphasizing that sustainable peace and stability depend on protecting civil liberties, ensuring accountability, and upholding international human rights standards. She underscored the importance of solidarity among societies confronting repression and highlighted the role of civic movements in advancing democratic reform.
In concluding her speech, Karman expressed confidence that popular movements advocating for freedom and justice will ultimately prevail despite temporary setbacks. She stated that historical experience demonstrates the enduring strength of democratic aspirations and the resilience of societies striving for political participation and equal rights.
The Guardian of Democracy Award is granted to public figures and organizations recognized for contributions to advancing democratic governance, human rights protections, and civic freedoms at regional and international levels.
