Science, Struggle, and Pride: Tawakkol Karman Honors Omar Yaghi’s Nobel Win
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Tawakkol Karman has hailed the awarding of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Palestinian-Jordanian scientist Omar Yaghi as a remarkable achievement and a source of pride for the entire Arab world.
In a statement shared on her official Facebook page, Karman praised Omar Yaghi’s Nobel Prize win as “a great honor for Palestine, Jordan, and all Arabs,” calling it a powerful testament to the creativity and resilience of the Palestinian people, who continue to produce scientists and thinkers despite occupation and displacement.
She emphasized that Yaghi’s global recognition reflects the enduring vitality and intellect of Palestinians.
“This is yet another affirmation that Palestine—despite all attempts to erase it—remains alive in the creativity, knowledge, and innovation of its people across every field of science and life,” she added.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced today that Omar Yaghi, Susumu Kitagawa of Japan, and Richard Robson of Australia have jointly received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their groundbreaking development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)—porous materials that have revolutionized modern chemistry. Their work has enabled new technologies for carbon capture, toxic gas storage, water harvesting from desert air, and clean energy innovation, marking a major advance in sustainability and environmental science.
