Nobel Laureate: Iran’s Uprising Is a Historic Moral Struggle, Warns Against Foreign Military Escalation
Human rights advocate and Nobel laureate Tawakkol Karman on Tuesday described the ongoing Iranian uprising as a historic and transformative movement driven by moral purpose and legitimate aspirations, according to a statement she shared on her official Facebook page.
In the statement, Tawakkol Karman said the popular effort to dismantle Iran’s entrenched theocratic system represents a defining moment in the country’s modern history. She warned that any potential American military strike on Tehran would be a tragic and deeply regrettable development, stressing that such an outcome would be the direct consequence of the ruling authorities’ prolonged record of aggression, repression, and destabilizing political conduct.
Karman emphasized that responsibility for any escalation would rest with the governing establishment, not with the protesters or the broader popular movement demanding political change.
Referring to long-standing principles of political history, she observed that authoritarian governance consistently creates the conditions for foreign interference and external intervention.
She concluded by reaffirming her unequivocal support for the Iranian popular movement while expressing firm opposition to any form of external military action.
