Human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman has condemned the killing of Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al-Sharif and three fellow journalists in an Israeli strike on Gaza, calling it a war crime that must be prosecuted before the International Criminal Court.
In a statement on her official Facebook page, Karman offered condolences to the families of Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqea, Ibrahim Daher, and Mohammed Nofal, as well as to Al Jazeera staff and the Palestinian people. She described the attack as “a heinous crime” that adds to a long record of killing journalists and civilians and targeting the truth.
Karman said the journalists “paid with their lives to convey the tragedy to the world,” and accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. She urged the international community to “break its shameful silence,” act to stop the killings, and protect journalists.
